Complete Radio Guinea Archive, Catalogued Online
Anyone who has explored the classic popular music of West Africa has surely discovered--and been entranced by--the spectacular sounds of Guinea, especially in the 60s and 70s. Bands like Bembeya Jazz, Houreya Band, Balla et ses Balladins created an immortal chapter in African music history, one that will surely endure. And it will endure in a more coherent form thanks to the work of Graeme Counsel who has compiled a complete catalog of 9,410 songs recorded by Radio Télévision Guinee (RTG) between 1960 and 2000.  There are links to rare audio and video, but mostly this is a complete roadmap to the music, and invaluable contribution to the study of popular music in Africa. As Afropop Hip Deep scholar Cherif Keita wrote to Mr. Counsel upon seeing this, "You have saved many libraries from burning."  Amen!  Start your own exploration here:http://www.radioafrica.com.au/RTG_catalogue.html
