Lionel Loueke Preps New Album, Hear New Track
Benin jazz guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke will be dropping a new album on August 28th called Heritage. The record will come via Blue Note Records and feature Loueke working with a new trio featuring Derrick Hodge on electric bass and Mark Guiliana on drums. The album was produced by Robert Glasper and will feature seven new originals by Loueke as well as two by Glasper. According to a recent interview with This Is Africa, Loueke named the album Heritage for his African ancestry and what he's learned from the west. As he explained:
I called it Heritage because it’s not just about the heritage I got from my ancestors on the African continent, but also about the things I’ve learned from the west. The fact that I’m speaking English right now, and that I also speak French (since Benin was a French colony). So all that heritage is part of me and that is part of the music.
While you wait for the new record, you can listen and download a new track from Loueke titled “Dangbe Dance.” The angular upbeat track showcases Loueke’s unique approach to jazz guitar and yields enchanting results.
