Ticket Giveaway! Egberto Gismonti Live in NYC
Egberto Gismonti is one of the guitar wonders of the world. This Brazilian maestro started on (and still plays) piano. But early on, in his quest to translate the complexities of the keyboard to the fretboard, he innovated 10, 12 and 14-string guitars with expanded tonal range and musical possibilities. He also developed a unique two-handed technique for playing these remarkable instruments. Gismonti’s monstrous talent, vision and technical prowess eventually led him into the realms of classical music (including study with Nadia Boulanger in Paris), jazz (especially the expansive ECM variety), and collaborations with popular Brazilian musicians. For all this, Gismonti's deepest inspiration has arguably been traditional Brazilian music, from Amazonian batuque, to Carioca samba and choro, to frevo, baião and forró from the Northeast. With some 50 albums to his credit since his 1969 recording debut, he is one of Brazil's most prolific composers and performers. Yet none of this truly captures the unique power of an Egberto Gismonti concert. That has to be experienced, and New Yorkers will get a rare opportunity to do that on Fri., Sept. 12 at Symphony Space. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and show time is 7 o'clock.
