THE MANHATTAN BROTHERS is a South African Jazz Quartet based in London UK formed in the 1930s. They released big hits like "Dubula Mfanandini”, "Vuka Vuka"including "Lovely Lies," that went to No 45 of Top 100 chart compiled by Billboard of United States of America. The first achievers of that kind of merit in South Africa

INFLUENCE
Our music influence came from the feeling of ragtime hip, swing, doop-woop and erratic strains from American jazzers that we fashioned ourselves with, but yet as in the true South African manner. We reinvented what they (Americans) were doing and added our own with African chorals like Sotho, Xhosa and Zulu harmonies. ”And that was the rebirth of South African Jazz”. Says, Joe Mogotsi

MEMBERS OF THE GROUP
The original QUARTETS were Joe Mogotsi, Rufus Khoza, the late Ronnie Sehume and Nathan "Dambuzza" Mdledle. Some of the legends who accompanied THE MANHATTAN BROTHERS included the likes of composer and saxophonists Macay Davashe, Kippie Moeketsi, drummer General Duze, and pianist Sol Klaaste. The great vocalist Mariam Makeba was also drafted in and as a result the famous "Lakutshona Ilanga," was recorded. Jonas Gwangwa and Hugh Masekela became part of the band as well. Some years later. Walter Loate replaced Ronnie Sehume. Rufus Khoza retired as well and consequently Sello Josh Makhene joined the band and The Manhattan Brothers recorded INYEMBEZI with Adam Glazier
