The danceable Marabi style emerged in the black South African communtities at the turn of the twentieth century. Much like the role of hot jazz in America's speakeasies during prohibition, Marabi became the style of music synonymous with the South African underground. Marabi then layed the foundation for mbaqanga, South Africa's unique brand of jazz.
