Ngqoko
Ancient Songs of South Africa

|
Friday, May 16th at 8PM
NYU Skirball Center
566 LaGuardia Place
at Washington Square South, NYC |
Considered national treasures in South Africa, the members of Ngqoko are masters of the African bow (ancestor of the Brazilian berimbau) and the only practitioners of the extraordinary 3,000 year-old-vocal style known as split tone singing (a highly developed form of overtone singing). This unusual ensemble is a guardian of rural Xhosa culture, maintaining the survival of indigenous South African traditions. Over the past two decades, Ngqoko has taken its music from obscurity to local and international venues and festivals. New York debut.

Roswell Rudd and Malicool
COMES TO THE CATSKILLS |
|
May 17th 2008
|
|
Internationally renowned trombonist ROSWELL RUDD joins several well-known Malian musicians in a special concert on May 17th at Big Twig Studios in Roscoe, New York. Rudd’s MALI-cool combo performs in the Saturday evening concert, which benefits Jeffersonville, New York-based community radio station WJFF Radio Catskill.
Hailed by New York Times columnist John Wilson as “… a trombonist of such sweeping power and majesty that he transcends all styles”, Rudd has influenced an entire generation of musicians.
Meanwhile, the African musicians that make up the MALI-cool experience are known as sterling musical improvisers whose traditional instruments provide entertaining contrasts and wonderful harmony with Rudd's trombone mastery. Together, the ensemble presents a fun, whimsical and masterful program that appeals to lovers of various musical genres.
