Doors 7:00 PM Show 7:30 PM The Tinariwen story is already well marinated in startling myths; fierce nomadic desert tribesmen toting guns and guitars, Ghadaffi’s poet-soldiers spreading their gospel of freedom throughout the world, turbaned rock’n’roll troubadours, Stratocaster on one shoulder, Kalashnikov on the other, 17 bullet wounds and rawest desert blues on earth. Like all myths, like all legends, there’s plenty of truth mixed in there with the wild fantasy and wishful thinking. But the real story is deeper, richer, more engrossing, and more universal. In the desert oasis of Tamanrasset, southern Algeria, three aimless teenage friends in exile – Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, Hassan Ag Touhami aka ‘The Lion of the Desert’ and Inteyeden - fall in love with the guitar, and with all the dreams of modernity and freedom that it embodies. They write songs about their own lives and about those of their friends, the modern Touareg youth, no longer lording over the desert on their camels, but living the clandestino life far from home, surviving by any means necessary, longing for friends and family, dreaming of retribution, of freedom, of self-determination. They are Kel Tinariwen, the ‘desert boys’.

Any time banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck puts out an album, that's cause for celebration, never more so than now that he is continuing his "Tales from the Acoustic Planet" series.
Volume 3, Throw Down Your Heart - Africa Sessions, is unquestionably the most ambitious release to date. Wanting to explore the banjo's roots as an original African instrument, Fleck and his brother, filmmaker Sascha Paladino, took a film and audio crew to five countries on the continent, documenting Fleck's interaction with an incredible array of musicians. The paired return with 250 hours of film and 40 audio recordings, from which Fleck culled the performances on this disc.
Throw Down Your Heart covers an extraordinary range of sounds, under the general rubric "world music." The finished film has already made the rounds of several festivals and art houses, capturing the Music Documentary prize at last's year's prestigious AFI SilverDocs event; I'm looking forward to its return engagement next month at the Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, MD. Hope this trailer sparks your interest to find a local screening; if that's not possible, Paladino promises a fully-loaded DVD later this year.

A.B.N is a New York City based group that has been performing together for nearly fifteen years. It is co-led with a repertoire including original tunes as well as popular songs made famous by some of Africa's most well known musical artists.
The founding members of African Blue Note are drummer JoJo Kuo from Cameroun, bassist Mamadou Ba from Senegal, guitarist Martin Atangana from Cameroun, keyboardist Azouhouni Adou from Cote D'Ivoire and trumpet/flugelhorn player Todd Horton from the U.S.A. Additional regular members include saxophonist Aaron Heick, formerly with Richard Bona, Chaka Khan, Carly Simon and Cindy Lauper, among others.

Talking drum ("tama") master Baye Kouyate, originally from Bamako, Mali, has been in New York for four years. His performances are a journey through a world of highly complex polyrhythms fusing traditional sounds of Mali with influences such as jazz, reggae, and latin grooves, all delivered by a high spirited crew of musicians. Les Tougarakes includes: Leni Stern; guitar, Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz; bassist, Tim Keiper; drumkit, and Yacouba Sissoko on kora. Before touching down in the New York City scene, Baye spent five years in Paris playing alongside French-Ivorian innovator Toma Sidibe. Recently, Baye has performed at Brooklyn Celebrates African Festival as well as shared the stage with well known artists such as Cheick Tidiane Seck, Mamadou Diabate, Vieux Farka Toure, The Brazilian Girls and Kenny Wolleson.

This legendary band was originally formed in Guinea, West Africa, in the late 1960’s by Guitarist Mamady “Djelike” Kouyate and singer Emile Soumah.
Their music became some of the most beloved and influential of their generation and their songs were widely imitated. Mamady later went on to perform for many years with Guinea’s most popular group, Bembeya Jazz National.
Now based in New York, Mamady Kouyate has decided to revive The Ambassadors. His electrifying guitar-work is supported by the new Mandingo Ambassadors, a crew of Guinean and American musicians who have steeped their glorious sound in classic 60's guinean mandingo music.
