Itutu feat. Burkina Electric
November 4, 6 & 7
Brooklyn Academy of Music
7:30PM
Whether choreographing works for Mikhail Baryshnikov or Michael Jackson; for the Paris Opera Ballet or Broadway (Hair, Passing Strange), former “punk ballerina” Karole Armitage is known for her edgy, unbridled energy and hyper-kinetic take on the contemporary zeitgeist.
For the US premiere of Itutu, Armitage collaborates with African pop band Burkina Electric and band member/composer Lukas Ligeti to create a haunting yet unabashedly festive fusion of dance and live music. Club electronica and ancient Burkinabé rhythms combine with off-kilter ballet and traditional African dance as Burkina Electric performs onstage with the Armitage Gone! Dance company, creating a world in which the modern and the traditional, the pop and the spiritual co-exist in a celebratory meeting ground. With live music by Burkina Electric and band member Lukas Ligeti.
Itutu was created with lead commissioning support from the L’ E. A. R. Teatro Massimo Vincenzo Bellini di Catania in Catania, Italy. The work received its World Premiere with the title Summer of Love on May 21, 2009 at Teatro Bellini. Additional commissioning support was provided by the BAM 2009 Next Wave Festival and Lincoln Center for Lincoln Center Out of Doors.

Septeto Nacional Ignacio Pineiro
November 7th
Hostos Community College
7:30PM
Septeto Nacional, was formed in 1927 by the first superstar of Cuban son, Ignacio Piñeiro. Born and raised in the working class Havana neighborhood of Pueblo Nuevo, Piñeiro epitomized the urban sonero. He started out as a brilliant rumbero, and he was a well-known akpón or lead vocalist of the santería chant tradition.
Many credit Piñeiro with being the first to introduce the trumpet to the traditional sexteto, thus creating the septeto format which endures to this day. He is also credited with making son music acceptable to all strata of Cuban society when he took Septeto Nacional to the World Exposition in Seville in 1928 where it created a sensation. Until then, son was the music of workers and peasants. Like jazz and tango, it was also the music most associated with houses of ill repute; it was even banned in Havana until the mid 1920’s. But the recognition son gained when Septeto Nacional visited the “Mother Country” was the seal of approval which paved the way for son to be played and danced at high society ballrooms and country clubs.
After Piñeiro’s death in 1968, the septet had a succession of leaders of renown, including guitarist/composer Rafael Ortiz, legendary rumbero Carlos Embale, and guitarist Richard Aymee Castro. In its current configuration, the Septeto Nacional is directed by bongo virtuoso Francisco Oropeza. Now more than eight decades after its founding, Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñeiro is a national treasure interpreting a timeless repertoire to the delight of audiences and dancers throughout the world.

Rupa and the April Fishes & Nation Beat
November 13th
The Bell House
8PM
"Is America Part Of The World?" music series returns with its second installment and two genre-defying bands celebrating their American heritage from San Francisco to New York. Musical nomads Rupa & The April Fishes will be traveling to NY behind their new album "este mundo," due out on Cumbancha on Oct. 27.
The San Francisco-based musical agitators are specialists in crossing borders and building bridges, and on "este mundo" they effortlessly mix elements of Gypsy swing, Colombian cumbia, French chanson and Indian ragas to create a sound Time Out has called "global agit-pop."
Brooklyn based Nation Beat plays American music from both the North and South. They are rhythm gatherers, harvesting the fruit of 500 years of cultural cross-breeding from northeastern Brazil to the deep American South often breaking out into massive carnival parties at their live shows. Banning Eyre from Afropop Worldwide calls them "a revelation...the most original and alluring fusion band I've heard in years."

The Hand of Fatima
November 13th
Anthology Film Archives
7:30PM
Anthology is thrilled to present the US Theatrical Premiere Run of THE HAND OF FATIMA, a double portrait of a rock critic and his favorite band. Robert Palmer was America’s pre-eminent music writer, best known for his book DEEP BLUES and his work for the NEW YORK TIMES. The Master Musicians of Jajouka are a hereditary Moroccan brotherhood who play music older than history, but have also jammed with Ornette Coleman and Sonic Youth. Using Robert Palmer’s writing about the band as her guide, Palmer’s daughter Augusta set out for Morocco in 2005 hoping to find out what happened when her father first met the Master Musicians of Jajouka on assignment for ROLLING STONE in 1971.
The film intercuts verite footage of the filmmaker’s journey with animations of Robert’s experiences in the 1970s, allowing the filmmaker (and the audience) to glean the truth between the lines of Robert’s mystical journey and to understand his all-consuming need for musical transcendence. That need was more than met by the Master Musicians, who were introduced to expatriate Tangiers society by the artist Brion Gysin in the 1950s, and then popularized by Rolling Stone Brian Jones, who recorded an album in their village which became a cult favorite upon its release shortly after his death. Encounters with Yoko Ono, Donovan, Anthony DeCurtis, and the elder Palmer’s four wives round out a journey that culminates with the Master Musicians’ indelible performance in their remote Moroccan village.

November 21st
Park Central Hotel
8:30PM
Few months after recording a resounding success with When The Heart Lies, leading female filmmaker and honcho of Purple Pine Productions, Vivian Ejike, is set again to hit the local and international movie scenes with another box office. Entitled Silent Scandal, the thought provoking flick, according to cerebral Vivian, would be released on VCD and DVD soon in Nigeria, Europe, US and the rest of Africa.
The dramatic love story that revolves around the hidden and triangular love lives of a strict mother, her spoilt daughter and an indigent 'playboy,' has top actress, Genevieve Nnaji, as the lead act. Uche Jombo, Ebele Okaro, Ghanaian import –Michael Majid and a host of other emerging acts.
Shedding more light, pretty Ejike, who just returned from the UK where she went to tidy up some movie-related deals, disclosed that Silent Scandal was painstakingly shot with hi-tech production equipment and thoroughly manned by tested professionals within and outside Nigeria.
“It's a contemporary movie that will blow away the minds of movie buffs. It's also an emotional story, where a mother and her only daughter, unknowingly, are torn apart by the true love and lust of an indigent young man. Silent Scandal is full of intrigues and suspense from start-to-finish. With all sense of modesty, it's another plus for Nollywood, especially now that the nation is preaching the gospel of re-branding.

Mariza
November 21st
Carnegie Hall
8PM

Mariza began singing fado as a child, before she could read. Her father sketched out little cartoon stories to help her remember the lyrics. At the age of five, she would join in the spontaneous singing at her parent's restaurant in Mouraria, one of
Lisbon ’s most traditional neighborhoods. Mariza was born in Mozambique, but her family moved to Portugal when she was a baby, giving her plenty of time to get immersed directly in the "Fado Houses" where singing is part of everyday life. "They all stand on emotions", says Mariza, "Fado is an emotional kind of music full of passion, sorrow, jealousy, grief, and often satire."
Mariza walks the fine line necessary to both genuinely carry the fado's tradition and bring it freshness for today. Her performance style captures the raw emotion that characterizes the genre, but with her own personal twist. Mariza is a performer who has it all - charisma, stunning looks, a voice to die for and shows that deal in musical passion and drama. With her heart breaking voice, she performs with graceful, dramatic gestures, leaving slender wistful notes hanging in the air. If you cannot understand Portuguese, there is no problem. The way she sings fado communicates directly to the soul and the emotions, tugging at the heart with a performance that speaks of longing, love and nostalgia.
Supported by her impressive acoustic trio, her voice is a gorgeous, evocative instrument and Mariza sings with bravura and power. "This isn't an image! It's me! I like my hair like this... there's no rule that says all fadistas have to have black hair..." says Mariza, "And I like to see beautiful clothes and make-up on stage... I just do what I would like to see..."
