Island-hopping through the Carribean, we visit several of the musical cultures that have their roots in Africa. We begin with two shows on Jamaica, and then move to Trinidad, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic.

As millions of people in the Caribbean and Brazil and New Orleans crank up for Carnival festivities this Februray 25-27, we get some perspective on soca That took carnival-obsessed Trinidad by storm in the early 80s. Several of soca's musical pioneers-Pelham Goddard, David Rudder, Shadow and others--tell us stories from back in the day. Featured in the show are rare copies of the soca LPs that ruled the dancefloor in Port of Spain. Plus the little known story of the East Indian contribution to the soca.
