Obama visits Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania
Senegal is the first of three stops for the Obama family during their week-long tour in Africa. For President Obama’s second visit to the African continent since taking office in 2009, the President and his family will also be making visits to South Africa and Tanzania. An initial hope for President Obama was to re-connect with the 94-year old former South African leader, Nelson Mandela, who has been a monumental figure and inspiration for President Obama. Mr. Mandela was hospitalized nearly three weeks ago, in very critical condition, so it doubtful that Obama will be able to meet with him. Along with South Africa and much of the world, we at Afropop have been closely following the fluctuating condition of South Africa’s first black leader, and we wish the best for him and his family. President Obama will pursue his plans to develop and secure strong relations with these three economically growing countries. Possibly taking hints from countries like China and Brazil whose involvement in Africa has increased over the past few years, the U.S is seeking more economic and political connections with Africa’s rising countries. While delving into the rich local music scenes might not be the first priority of the Commander in Chief, it is always Afropop's priority! When we traveled to Senegal, Tanzania and South Africa, it was to highlight the freshest music from the African continent! So be sure to check out our programs and Hip Deep shows that feature the music of Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania! Explore the Gospel music of South Africa with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, The Four Eagle Gospel Singers, The Birmingham Sunlights, The Gospel Harmonettes, and The Fairfield Four, as well as an interview with founder and musical director of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Joseph Shabalala! Ladysmith Black Mambazo will also be at Celebrate Brooklyn tomorrow night! http://www.afropop.org/wp/6537/gospel-live-from-south-africa-to-alabama/ [soundcloud url="http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/68799137" params="" width=" 100%" height="166" iframe="true" /] Hip Hop travels back to its original roots--Africa.
