Afrofuturism at Carnegie Hall in February: Sun Ra Arkestra, Chimurenga Renaissance and Fatoumata Diawara

Been a minute since we’ve ventured up to Carnegie Hall, but we’ll have ample reason to early next year. The iconic institution announced this week that they’ll be throwing an “Afrofuturism Festival” starting in February and running through March. It’s going to feature some of our favorite artists, both from the continent and from America, including Fatoumata Diawara, the Sun Ra Arkestra and Flying Lotus.

We’ll be listing, mentioning, and with any luck, attending the shows, but go ahead and mark down March 4, because that’s when we’ll be graced by Fatoumata Diawara and Chimurenga Renaissance, a Zimbabwe-centered hip-hop project from Shabazz Palaces’ Tendai “Baba” Maraire and the rapper Hussein Kalonji that melds electronic music with ngoma drums and mbiras, so very much our jam.

But then, looking over the lineup, it all seems like our jam; just check out this trailer.

There’s also a whole host of city-wide events and partners that will be announced in January, so stay tuned in….the future. Tickets are now available.
