Afropop is thrilled to present the American video premiere for “Así Lo Canto Yo,” a collaboration between two generations of Colombian singers. Mónica Giraldo is a Berklee College graduate who returned home to Bogotá to study Afro-Colombian tradition. She is joined on the track by Totó La Momposina, whose tremendous voice reflects her Mompox island heritage.
La Momposina comes from the tradition of cantadora: women who act as indispensable members of their communities--planting vegetables, serving as village counselors, and leaders of Chandé, the Afro-Colombian musical tradition of the area. La Momposina has been performing since the late ‘60s, and was recognized by the Latin Grammys with the 2011 Record of the Year for her collaboration with Calle 13, “Latinoamérica.” This year, her latest record, El Asunto, was nominated for Best Folk Album.
The video for “Así Lo Canto Yo” was shot in a traditional house in Bogotá. Giraldo accompanies herself on acoustic guitar to open the song, before being joined by the magnificent voice of La Momposina and her son on the drums. Check it out below!
