Afropop Worldwide is excited (very excited- very VERY excited) to invite you to the first New York City- heck, the first AMERICAN screening of the brand new "Tropicália" documentary at Videology (308 Bedford Ave) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, this Friday, Nov. 8th, at 8 PM. Not only will we be showing the film, but we are going to be raffling away some sweet Brazilian vinyl, downing some tasty Caipirinha, and cutting a rug to the sounds spun by DJ Cleary. So be sure to come- vai ser muito bom!  Long before the so-called global village came into existence, and the Internet made it easy to spread your name around the world, Brazil was already global. It is a country which is culturally cannibalistic by nature, in which the new and the old, the foreign and the indigenous, not only lie side by side but are mixed, assimilated and recreated day in day out. What sort of country is it, in which, at the height of the 60’s, a capoeira song, played with the aggressive drive of rock’n’roll, found its way into thousands of homes, entitled ‘Sunday in the Park’? What do you call this huge melting-pot? Tropicalism! Set against the turbulent atmosphere of the 1960s, Tropicália is a feature length documentary exploring the Brazilian artistic movement known as tropicália, and the struggle its artists endured to protect their right to freely express revolutionary thought against the traditional Brazilian music of that time.
