The Brazilian band CSS is about to drop their fourth LP, Planta, on March 14th, and we’re pretty interested to hear this thing. Planta was produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek and will be the band's first release since the departure of longtime guitarist Adriano Cintra. Given that, it seems fair to anticipate that it will be a significant departure from the band’s previous work, and at this point, it’s unclear whether it’ll be an upgrade or not.
Case in point: “Hangover”, the lead single from Planta. The track is fun, stretching lots of ambient synths, tasty horn lines, and hot vocals over an airy, electro beat, but it’s fairly lightweight and forgettable, nothing like the electric shock provided by earlier singles “Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex”, “Rat Is Dead”, or “Hits Me Like A Rock”. The album is out June 5th in Japan, 10th in the UK, & 11th in the US, so we’ll know soon enough if this move towards an increasingly danceable electro sound is a calculated risk that pays off or alienates their fan base.
