Awesome Tapes From Africa Presents Papé Nziengui, Awesome Folk-Fusion From Gabon
Music from Gabon can be hard to come by outside of the Central
African country’s borders, and even in Gabon, it’s been tough to
track down Papé Nziengui’s late ‘80s, postmodern masterpiece.
Kadi Yombo is Gabonese harp
music, which is mostly played
in sacred Tshogo rituals, mixed with synthesizers, a male voice and
female chorus in response and percussion at a blistering pace. Long
out of rotation at home and abroad, the crate-digging label Awesome
Tapes From Africa is reissuing the album April 8, and has just released
the first single from what will be a double LP.
