Banjo Dambala
As part of his research for "After the Quake: Music, Politics, and Spirituality in Haiti," Ned Sublette spent time on the ground for Kanaval in Jakmel, a port city in the Haiti's far south. While there, he took extensive video of a variety of powerful performances. Here is a particular favorite.
Ned says:
Dambala, a powerful lwa (spirit) known in both rada and petwo nanchons, appears in serpentine form. I knew I would encounter him in Haiti, and it happened on the morning of Feb. 3, 2013, the day of Kanaval in Jakmel, when I stepped out into the street about 8 in the morning and the first thing I saw was this man playing banjo and singing.
