The latest single of Captain Planet’s album sets a classic hip-hop undercarriage under a sultry, KarenBe-sung Arabic melody, propelled along with generous helpings of flutes and squiggling synths. The video is, appropriately, bonkers.
After singles with Alsarah and Zimbabwe’s Shungudzo, it should be no surprise that Captain Planet lives up to his name and is willing to try his hand in an Arabic modality. But credit where credit’s due, the man can find collaborators. Born to parents from Syria and Barbados, KarenBe seems right at home as a Bedouin pop star, drawing from her own work as an electronic music artist.
No Visa is out now on Bastard Jazz, and continues to be a welcome escape from whatever borders try to bind you.
