Gustave Bentho of Orchestra Poly-Rhythmo passes away

As African music history continues to pass before our eyes, we report another passing. Gustave Bentho was the original and long-lasting bass player for Orchestra Poly-Rhythmo, one of the greatest bands of West Africa's golden era. Pioneers of Afro-funk and leaders in popularizing the rhythms and melodies of Benin's vodoun religion, Poly-Rhythmo gave Fela Kuti's bands a run for their money in the 1970s and '80s. In their late career, the band toured the United States in the 2000s, and Afropop was lucky to see and hear them, including at Central Park Summestage in 2012.

Few original members remain with us today, but their music will live eternally. We particularly recommend their reissues on Analog Africa, including this one.
