Also known affectionately by his fans as l'Eléphant de la Musique Africaine (the Elephant of African Music) in his home of the Democratic Republic of Congo and throughout the world, Pepe Kalle was a soukous giant, quite literally, during his short 46 years of life. He stood at 6' 3'' and weighed over 300 pounds, and inspired audiences to dance with his commanding voice and his band's intoxicating arrangements.
