Louise Meintjes M.M., Ph.D., University of Texas is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Duke University.  Louise Meintjes has been teaching ethnomusicology at Duke since 1996. She holds a joint position in the departments of music and cultural anthropology and is affiliated to the African and African American Studies Program. Her awards include an Individual Research Grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation (2001), Rockefeller Fellowship in the Black Performing Arts, Stanford Humanities Center (2001-02), and she was selected for a Langford Lecture Award for recently tenured faculty (2005). Her research interests include South Africa, music as symbolically spoken; mediation and technology, music/language relationships; politics of cross-cultural collaborations, and dance and masculinity. She is the author of Sounds of Africa! Making Music Zulu in a South African Studio (Duke University Press, 2003).
