Video: Jomion and the Uklos on B-Side
On Thurs., Sept. 15, Afropop Worldwide's Banning Eyre appeared on BRIC TV for an exclusive live in-studio performance and interview with Jomion and the Uklos. Jomion and the Uklos is a family band from Benin, West Africa, led by Samuel "Jomion" Gnonlonfoun, founder of the internationally renowned Gangbé Brass Band. With his brothers JB and Mathieu and his daughter Rose, Jomion combines traditional rhythms and songs from vodun (voodoo) culture with reggae, salsa and jazz to create vibrant, relaxed dance music he named whedo-vodun-jazz (WVJ). The event was hosted by Banning Eyre, Afropop's co-founder and senior producer. You may be familiar with Jomion and the Uklos from our program Benin: Transforming Traditions, and we encourage you to read our interview with the group. B-Side is BRIC TV's live in-studio music series and screening, featuring performances from emerging and established musicians on Thursday evenings–free of charge.
