Musician and scholar Michael E. Veal is Professor of Ethnomusicology in the Departments of Music and African-American Studies at Yale University. He is the author of Fela: The Life & Times of an African Musical Icon (Temple University Press, 2000) and the award-winning Dub: Soundscapes and Shattered Songs in Jamaican Reggae (Wesleyan University Press, 2007). His forthcoming books include Technotopia 1969: Miles Davis at the Crossroads and Tony Allen: Master Drummer of Afrobeat. Professor Veal is also a musician. He leads Michael Veal & Aqua Ife - an Afrobeat-jazz big band in which he plays electric bass - and Michael Veal’s Armillary Sphere, a free-jazz quintet in which he plays soprano saxophone.
