It’s
a time of transformation, of connection, of letting go—of what
hinders you, including inhibitions. In other words, its Musaraña
time. The Latinx electro-duo of singer Maria Laboy and producer
Andres Rigau return with two
new songs today that, thematically, are suited right this moment.
First, it’s time to toss out the old, to get rid of that “dirty laundry,” which is the translation of the title of Musaraña’s new brujeria tune “Ropa Sucia.”
The
song encourages the listener to “get rid of negative energies,
memories and relationships that no longer serve us.” Over
pulsing percussion and increasingly frantic string hits, Laboy’s
vocal lines drive towards the chorus and an ominous bridge. The
production flirts its way through a haunted '80s disco, never resting,
always preparing for the next shift. As a dance track, it commands
your attention but it gives as good as it takes.
All of which segues nicely into Musaraña’s other release from today, “Valle.”
The
hot-and-heavy song is about letting go of our hang-ups and tapping
into “our primal side.” The production again is a hallway of all
left turns—after
establishing a sort of electronic merengue
strut, an
early climactic moment opens into a Latin-jazz inflected
piano interlude, before a pulsing Donna Summer synthesizer guides the
song back up to a frenzy, and eventually a hand-clapped reprise.
"I’m
excited for the launch of these tracks as I think they provide an
opportunity for people to explore and open up their conceptions of
intimacy, freedom and self-love. Also I’m dying for people to dance
these despojos to loud speakers and cast away all the bad vibes,
memories that 2020 and even early 2021 still left in all of us and
create a renewed state of mind for the future,” Laboy
added.
The songs are available across digital platforms today, and Musaraña’s full-length album comes out July 28.
