Niger Delta Mixtape
We’ve put together a mixtape to let you savor more of the great music that animates our program Hip Deep in the Niger Delta. It’s a mix of old Rex Lawson highlife and current day Naija pop from Rivers State, including four tracks not on any commercial release, notably St Mercy’s powerful cry from the streets of Port Harcourt, “Raise My Guns.” We end with an extended live take of Rex Lawson’s “Aremio” performed by a collective of young and old Port Harcourt musicians in concert at the Shed, in a concert co-hosted by Chicoco Radio and Afropop Worldwide. https://soundcloud.com/afropop-worldwide/niger-delta-mixtape Here’s a list of the songs sampled in this mixtape. “Dom Utelikang” Rex Lawson “Gbate Fa Te” Rex Lawson “Happy Survival” Eddy Okwedi “Port Harcourt 1st Son” Duncan Mighty “Raise My Guns” St Mercy (Chicoco Radio) “Dawn in the Creek” Soxxi (Chicoco Radio) “January Money” MC Kay (Ogoniland) “Jah Message” Tumsi (Ogoniland) “Aremio (live)” Port Harcourt Highlife Collective (not an official band)
