Protoje & Yaadcore Drop Free Reggae Revival Mixtape
In an on-going effort to bring the Jamaican reggae revival to the masses, Jamaican selector DJ Yaadcore and Protoje have dropped another free mixtape titled Music From My Heart. The mix which clocks in at over an hour covers a number of tracks from Protoje’s two long-players including his most recent The 8-Year Affair. It also features a number of cuts featuring collaborations with fellow reggae revivalists Jah9, Kabaka Pyramid, Chronixx, and Sizzla Kalonji. The new reggae movement which is heavy on Rastafari spirituality and a live-band sound has grown in popularity rapidly outside the island. However, despite a handful of popular radio singles, it still has an uphill battle for airwaves and coverage within Jamaica itself. Protoje has commented on these free mixtapes as a method to gain greater exposure. While many Jamaicans still do not have regular internet access, their efforts should not go unrecognized, particularly in a Jamaican music industry that is often fractured, disorganized and difficult to navigate. Music From My Heart acts as an excellent starting point to delve into Protoje’s sound and message. Straddling a line between dub-heavy, roots reggae and a mid-tempo digitized '80s dancehall sound, the mixtape showcases Protoje’s versatility whether he’s singing or toasting. Also be sure to check out Yaadcore’s Reggae Aroma Vol.2 #theREVIVAL which covers other major figures in this new reggae revival.
