Afropop Worldwide was very sorry to learn of the death of Regis Gizavo, on July 16 at just age 58. Regis was one of Madagascar's greatest musicians. He was born in Tulear in southwest Madagascar and went on to become one of the world's most beloved accordionists. He won Radio France International's coveted Discoveries award in 1990, and spent a great deal of time in Paris thereafter, touring and releasing albums on his own, and working with musicians from Cape Verde, Corsica, Zimbabwe and, of course, Madagascar. His most recent project was Toko Telo, a trio with fellow Tulear musicians D'Gary and Monika Njava. The trio was scheduled to tour in the United States next year. It will not be easy to find a replacement for this profoundly original artist.
