Scholar: Paul Austerlitz
Paul Austerlitz is a composer, ethnomusicologist, and Assistant Professor of Music and Africana Studies at Brown University. His book Merengue: Dominican Music and Dominican Identity is the definitive English language account of this significant and highly influential music genre. Austerlitz has also conducted research on jazz and folk music in the country of his birth, Finland, and he is currently preparing a critical edition of music from the repertory of the Latin-jazz band Machito. Austerlitz is also active as a jazz musician and composer and has performed with Doc Cheatham, David Murray, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among others.
