Oliver Mtukudzi's daughter, Selmor Mtukudzi, an acclaimed Afro-jazz singer in her own right (check out her recent song "Nguva Yangu"), has teamed up with the humanitarian organization One Campaign to create a song and a social media campaign (see #WithStrongGirls) to empower women and girls in poverty-stricken regions, particularly on the African continent, and raise awareness that poverty disproportionately affects women and girls. Selmor will be in Washington, D.C. and New York next week to speak to the media, nonprofit organizations, and politicians on Capitol Hill about the next stage of One Campaign's efforts to promote electricity legislation in Africa and the "Poverty Is Sexist" campaign. The original Naija-style Afrobeats song "Strong Girl" features Selmor Mtukudzi alongside Nigerian superstar Yemi Alade, Waje (Nigeria), Victoria Kimani (Kenya), Vanessa Mdee (Tanzania), Arielle T (Gabon), Gabriela (Mozambique), Judith Sephuma (South Africa), Blessing Nwafor (South Africa). The new “Strong Girl Remix" brings some male artists into the mix, including Nigerian superstars D’Banj and Banky W, Diamond from Tanzania, and One Campaign cofounder and U2 lead singer Bono.
