Every year in March and April, Montreal's up-and-coming African diaspora bands take the stage at Club Balatou hoping to win audience favor in the Syli d'Or battle of bands. It comes down to nine semi-finalists and three finalists, who will battle it out on April 28.
Afropop Worldwide always reviews the performances by the nine semi-finalists and awards the Afropop Prize to the group that best reflects our mission of promoting African music culture in North America.
This year, the Afropop Prize for 2022 goes to Syroko. This group champions Algerian chaabi, a genre that has not had a lot of international exposure. They do it with deep familiarity and playfulness that clearly energizes a live audience. And by bringing in elements of rai, Latin sounds, even a Cesaria Evora cover, they open the music to new horizons. We look forward to speaking with the band and learning more about their story and art.
