Tal National Ticket (and Drink) Giveaway!
[Photo by Bill Farrington] If you like to dance and see incredible guitar playing, you’ll want to catch Tal National when they return to New York for a concert at Le Poisson Rouge on Aug. 19. Tickets are now on sale for $15, but, if you email us at info@afropop.org with the subject “Tal National” and your name, you could win a pair of free tickets to the concert. To sweeten the deal, Poisson Rouge is also throwing in free drink tickets for our winner. Along with the Tuareg guitarist Bombino, Tal National is one of Niger’s leading musical exports. The “national” in their band name is meant to unify the country, and Tal National’s band members represent many of the nation’s ethnicities and languages: Fulani, Gourmantche, Hausa, Zarma, Kanuri. You can read more about their story in an interview by Minna Zhou for Afropop, and check out our review of their latest album, Zoy Zoy, here. On stage, Tal National puts on a terrific show, with soukous-style guitar playing and Hausa talking drums, along with trance-induced dancing. Joining Tal National for the concert will be Senegalese DJ Dakar and Sierra Leonean musician Janka Nabay, who plays mystical bubu music. You can read his interview with Afropop’s Banning Eyre here.
