Judging from their debut album, Kuenta i Tambu--a young, rhythm-drunk group from Curacao via the Netherlands--wants to convince you of a few things. For one, that your likely inability to point out the Caribbean island on a map (hint- it's above Venezuela) is your own damn fault, and not due to the island's lack of an enduring spectacular (or potentially spectacularly enduring) musical culture. For another, that the beats derived from the native tambu, an African-derived musical form long declared illegal due to its supposed connection with all manner of illicit behavior and played to deafening volumes on the detached
