Antibalas, originally a neighborhood dance/protest band in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has become a global Afrobeat sensation over the past two decades. Founded in 1998 by saxophonist Martín Perna, the band initially featured members of The Dap-Kings and later added new talent from various NYC music scenes.
In 1999, Duke Amayo joined the band and eventually became its frontman. He introduced Afro-Spot, both the band's headquarters and the first Daptone Records studio. Over the years, Antibalas performed across NYC and the world, hitting festivals like Glastonbury and Coachella. They also served as the band for the Tony-winning Broadway musical “Fela” and collaborated with artists like the Roots and Public Enemy.
Their latest album, “Fu Chronicles,” is a blend of Afrobeat and kung fu influences, masterfully capturing the band's live energy. Recorded in 2018 at Daptone House of Soul, the album marks Antibalas's eighth studio release. With a rich history and a bold new album, Antibalas continues to redefine Afrobeat music.
