Cuba’s beloved “Queen of Salsa,” Celia Cruz, would have turned 100 in 2025. To honor her centennial, SummerStage assembles a stellar group of contemporary Cuban artists whose careers reflect her genre‑spanning legacy. Havana-born salsero Isaac Delgado helped pioneer timba as a founding member of NG La Banda and has continued exploring the intersections of salsa, funk, R&B and Afro‑Cuban rhythms.
Alain Pérez is a virtuoso bassist, composer and bandleader known for weaving flamenco, jazz and Afro‑Cuban sounds. Aymee Nuviola, nicknamed “La Sonera del Mundo,” is a multiple GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY‑winning singer and actor who portrayed Celia Cruz in a Colombian telenovela, while percussionist Brenda Navarrete brings a masterful command of batá drums and has collaborated with inter‑generational Afro‑Cuban ensembles. Together with rising vocalist Melvis Santana, they channel Cruz’s infectious energy and pay homage to her enduring influence on global music.
The concert is free and open to all ages; doors open at 6:00 p.m. on August 9 and the music runs from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield.
