At DROM on January 9, the program moves through contemporary jazz shaped by global influences, featuring the Arun Ramamurthy Trio, Amir ElSaffar’s quartet, and New Jazz Underground. The evening traces a gradual shift from acoustic exploration toward more electronically inflected approaches.
Cameroonian-American vocalist Ekep Nkwelle appears in a featured set marking her Winter Jazzfest debut. A rising figure in the current jazz landscape, she has drawn critical attention for a voice that balances clarity and strength, with phrasing informed by jazz, gospel, and her Cameroonian heritage.
Later performances by the David Murray Quartet and the James Brandon Lewis Trio extend the night toward more established voices in contemporary jazz.
The date is part of the Winter Jazzfest Manhattan Marathon, spanning eight venues across Lower Manhattan.
