Afropop Premiere: Combo Chimbita, "Frio Severo"
Combo Chimbita makes powerful genre-defying, psychedelic Colombian music with just a quartet: Felipe Quiroz, Andres Jiménez and Camilo Rodriguez of M.A.K.U. Soundsystem with singer Carolina Oliveros, cantadora of the traditional bullerengue group Bulla en El Barrio. On our recent program Colombia in NYC, we featured music from their upcoming EP El Corredor Del Jaguar co-produced with Greenwood Rhythm Coalition, out Oct. 28 on Names You Can Trust. On our program, we featured a live version of the rolling 6/8 jam "Frio Severo," and today we're excited to share an exclusive premiere of the studio version: "Frio Severo" is an energetic tropical revolt against the impending New York winter, with strong Congolese-style guitar lines, percussive drums, blurry synths, and impassioned vocals.
