Fundraising and Development Internships at Afropop
ABOUT AFROPOP WORLDWIDE Afropop Worldwide is a Peabody Award-winning public radio program and website. The prestigious award honors Afropop for excellence in storytelling over the 27-year body of our work. Our mission is to promote recognition and enjoyment of the contemporary musical cultures of Africa and its global diasporas. Hosted by broadcast personality Georges Collinet from Cameroon, and distributed by PRI to 95 stations, our programs feature hallmark country reports, live concert recordings, historical retrospectives, and more. We are committed to getting the music and stories as broadly distributed as possible through fresh content published daily on and on our active social media. Long-term support comes from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. About Afropop Worldwide Development Internships This position is excellent for anyone interested in building skills in fundraising and development for a nonprofit organization, especially for those who are passionate about the power of music and stories to connect people across perceived barriers of distance, race, religions and more. The development intern will work closely with our team to regularly conduct research on prospective individual donors, corporate sponsors, and foundations. Interns will also work on the all-important stewardship of existing donors and sponsors. Interns will conduct research on foundations and draft proposals. He/she will work with our founder and executive producer, Sean Barlow, on scheduling, meetings, research on subjects, and outreach. Interns will learn how to manage our donor database, process incoming donations, draft thank you letters, campaign appeals and letters of inquiry to donors, potential donors, corporations and foundations. Interns may participate in researching support for our new multimedia educational service. See “Samba at the Dawn of Modern Brazil.” Another focus is developing support for the protection and development of our irreplaceable archive of field recordings, photos, documents, videos and more. Afropop has a well-earned reputation for producing highly enjoyable fundraising and “friendraising” events which interns participate in managing. The Afropop name is golden throughout New York’s arts presenters community when it comes to African, Latin, Caribbean and fusion music and there are ample opportunities to get comp tickets. About YOU: Hard-working, energetic, able to work independently. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Microsoft Office expertise and Internet experience. Able to work at least 15 hours/week. Writing experience in music and knowledge of African/African diaspora music and culture, as well as prior familiarity with social media, is preferred but not required. Excellent writing, editing and Web research skills are absolutely necessary. Interns should be able to work well with deadlines and be self-starters. Proficiency in WordPress and some HTML familiarity is desired. Language skills a plus (French, Spanish, Portuguese). Must have strong references.
