Tune In: Afropop on KALW in San Francisco Bay Area Monday
Bay Area Afropop fans will have a rare chance to hear the show in its natural environment—the airwaves—on Mon., Sept. 7, when our program, “San Francisco: Afropop By the Bay,” is broadcast on local station KALW, 91.7 FM at 7 p.m. The show tells the story of how, before New York, Chicago or Washington D.C., San Francisco was the first American city with an African music scene. Hear about the artists from Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, including Baba Ken Okulolo, Joni Haastrup and Hedzoleh Soundz, who convened on the West Coast in the '70s and '80s, sometimes on purpose, sometimes due to visa problems. If you're in the Bay Area—or know someone who is—gather 'round the old wireless while the fog sets in on Monday and appreciate yet another musical legacy from one of America's most vibrant and beautiful cities.
