Kuku: Ballads and Blasphemy
Back in 2013, Afropop's Morgan Greenstreet mentioned how the collaboration between Nigerian singer Kuku and Congolese rapper Baloji maintained the integrity of Fela's grooves and arrangements with their cover of Fela's "Buy Africa" on the Red Hot +Fela tribute album. He dropped a five-song EP titled Open Your Eyes While You Pray in 2014, and in less than a year he's back with a full-length album titled Ballads and Blasphemy: The Areligious Gospel of Adebola Kuku. The new record features Fela co-conspirator and Afrobeat heavyweight Tony Allen and French-Iranian drummer Cyril Atef. The album will be released on Sept. 25, but you can stream it in its entirety below. https://soundcloud.com/user8947000/sets/ballads-blasphemy
