What's Playing in Chicago?
New York may be home base for Afropop Worldwide, but the world music scene has many homes throughout the world. In this post, we recognize what’s poppin’ over in Chi-town. On Jan. 20, Old Town School hosted a World Music Party featuring DJ Bashert and Angel D’Cuba, a former lead singer with Cuban group Mezcal. D’Cuba is known for his use of original songs juxtaposed with creative arrangements, bringing together genres like salsa, timba, calypso, cumbia, funk, soul, jazz and more. Keep your eye on their website for even more world-renowned artists in upcoming months, like the 50-year celebration of the all-male South African a cappella group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Dobet Gnahoré, Ivorian vocalist and dancer who has often been compared to the likes of “Lauryn Hill…India.Arie and…Erykah Badu” (St. Louis American) will also be part of the February lineup.
