Popcaan: "Weed Is My Best Friend"

Not content to just be a part of one of the best songs of the summer, the exuberant life-affirming "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" with Jamie XX and Young Thug, Popcaan has now blessed us with the summer’s most joyful ode to ganja, “Weed Is My Best Friend.” Since releasing his excellent debut album Where We Come From on Mixpak Records last year, Popcaan has stayed busy, popping up on the reggae remix of Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot Nigga” with Mavado and Junior Reid, and putting out the unabashedly intoxicated party anthem “Never Sober” a couple months ago, along with the Jamie XX track. The pairing of Popcaan with Young Thug on that song was inspired, as both are consummate stylists whose music is as much about vocal inflections as it is about their chosen subject matter: a lifestyle of fun and barely imaginable excess. Let us hope for more Young Thug-Popcaan collaborations to come.

Popcaan’s latest rides on the heavenly string-filled “Life Support” riddim from producer Justus Arison. That riddim was originally released last month on a compilation featuring some of dancehall’s biggest names: Mavado, Beenie Man, Sean Paul and Gyptian, among others. But the riddim seems to have been made specially for Popcaan’s purposes. As Popcaan sings weed's praises, you can practically see the song soundtracking a buddy film romp: just Popcaan and his best friend.
