Yam Session: NYC's Afro Jam Session
Every so often, we hear about a new initiative that really piques our interest, like the Yam Session, a new Afro jam session starting up in New York. Drawing on African roots music, old-school African classics and contemporary hits from the African continent, the Yam Session is a monthly jam session for the African music community (interpreted broadly to include Afro-diasporic music and all lovers of Afro music) in the city. What a great idea! We're excited to attend the first session, Feb. 18, 10 p.m. at Silvana. Check out the event here. ] The Yam Session will be led by a house band composed of members of New York's top African bands, including Jomion & the Uklos, Isaac Katalay & LLPG, and Allinor, but the primary goal of the session is to bring the African music community together to meet, make music, make connections and create together. The jam is open to all musicians, dancers and Afro-music lovers to enjoy. The Yam Session will take place every third Thursday of the month, 10 p.m.-midnight, at Silvana, 300 W. 116th St, New York, NY 10026. Totally free admission, donations welcome. Upcoming dates: Feb. 18, March 17; April 14May 19 and June 16. Mark your calendars, and stay tuned to the Yam Session Facebook page for more info. Print
