Fémina is a three-woman, mostly electronic group that draws as much from hip-hop as it does from South American folk influences. The pan-Latin American-inclined British DJ and producer Quantic seems like a natural partner in collaboration, but Iggy Pop? He kind of comes out of left field on their new single—or rather, rises up from the ocean.
The song “Resist” is the third single off the upcoming Quantic-produced record, Perlas & Conchas, slated to come out April 5.
The trio is comprised of Clara "Wewi" Trucco, Sofia "Toti" Trucco and Clara Miglioli, ‘90s hip-hop fans from San Martin de Los Andes in the Patagonian mountains. With their eyes on careers in dance or theatre, they moved to Buenos Aires and got into the local music scene. Although the hip-hop influence is still present, they began harmonizing and incorporating folk instruments like the Bolivian ronroco into their music.
Their second album, 2014’s Traspasa, rode the popularity of the song “Buen Viaje” up to six million Spotify plays and to the ears of none other than Iggy Pop himself. The ever-eclectic rock legend—who also popped up on Songhoy Blues’s 2017 album—played Fémina on his BBC 6 radio show, and invited the group to swing by his Miami home when they were in town, and laid the groundwork for “Resist.”
Judging from the video of the group in the studio with Quantic, a sort of behind-the-scenes view of the single “Arriba,” the sessions look like they hit that fertile intersection of fun and careful, diligent work, fitting for a band known for weaving together disparate threads.
