In this installment of "Best of The Beat on Afropop," we present the First Lady of African Music, Angelique Kidjo. Her career began in her birthplace, Benin, and from thence to Paris and New York. Brooke Wentz's article on her dates from 1993, as Angelique began taking the world by storm. Her dynamic presence and sonorous voice, not to mention her ultra-modern costumes and striking hairstyles, were absolutely sensational. She has continued to grow into ever-widening arenas, winning Grammy awards, as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, establishing a foundation for girls' education, recording with symphony orchestras, and as author of an autobiography, Spirit Rising. To coincide with her upcoming appearance at Boston's House of Blues Jan. 24, and a nomination for yet another Grammy for her 2015 album, Sings, with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, we offer this glance back over her brilliant career.
