Malian Grammy winner Oumou Sangaré is to launch a new album on April
29, via World Circuit Records, and has released the first single and
video this week.
Check out “Sarama” right here:
The album is titled
Timbuktu and was recorded in
Mali, France and the United States, with much of the album written in
Baltimore, where Sangaré found herself as COVID shut down
international travel in 2020. After buying a house in the Charm City,
her longtime ngoni player, Mamadou Sidibé, came over and together
they wrote 10 of Timbuktu’s
11 songs. The rolling Wassoulou rhythm and bluesy sounding ngoni form
an approachable, almost hypnotic, field for Sangaré’s poetry
to flow within.
