With the Apollo Theater’s annual Africa Now festival set for this weekend and featuring some of today’s hottest African dancehall acts, Best of The Beat on Afropop takes a look back to 2002, when the first wave of dancehall artists springing from African roots and cross-pollinated by Jamaican style began to draw notice internationally.
The feature, by Lisa Poliak, introduces Senegal’s Daara-J, Pee Froiss, and V.I.B.;
Gambia’s Rebellion D’Recaller, and Dancehall Masters; Tikken Jah Fakoly, Negromuffin and Jo Black from Ivory Coast;
and South Africa’s Bongo Maffin.
