In a salute to Women’s History Month, "Best of The Beat" offers a feature from 1998 on Sally Nyolo, an eclectic Cameroonian singer/composer and bandleader who had burst upon the international scene like a shooting star.
Beat contributor Steve Heilig met the Paris-based artist in San Francisco for a discussion of her career, her sojourn with the all-female a cappella group Zap Mama (led by Marie Daulne), and her musical inspirations drawn from traditional and modern sources, including the Baka Pygmies.
At the time of Steve’s encounter with her, Sally had just released a solo album, Multiculti, and was on tour in the U.S. She has gone on to release six albums since this time, all of them recommended listening for Afropop fans.
Her latest album is Tiger Run, reviewed here.
