It is with deep sadness that we announce that a true champion of global music, Dan Storper, has left us after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Dan, the creator of Putumayo Records, was a great friend and supporter of our work at Afropop Worldwide. We crossed paths often, going back to our earliest days. His vision, smarts, sensitivity, passion and positive outlook were constants in our every interaction. He championed the music of so many of our great heroes, including Oliver Mtukudzi, Habib Koite and Johnny Clegg, among others.
Dan's longtime collaborator Jacob Edgar writes:
"Dan was a visionary who shared his passion for music and cultural diversity with the world and helped make it a better place. He touched the lives of so many people, and those who knew him will remember him as a good soul with a kind heart, a positive spirit, and a great sense of humor. He will be deeply missed."
In 2017, Banning Eyre was lucky to interview Dan on the 20th anniversary of his pride and joy, Putumayo. Here is that interview.
